School starts tomorrow so we had this lesson today. We talked about what to do if we see someone on or near the school that should not be there or who looks like they should not be there. It’s better to be safe than sorry. We talked about always using the buddy system to walk home. We talked about passwords in case someone else needs to pick them up. We talked about obeying the traffic laws and waiting for the crossing guard to tell you its okay to cross. We also reviewed what to do if they are home alone. Always answer the phone. If they ask for Mom or Dad say they are busy. Don’t tell them you are home alone. Don’t answer the door. Etc.
We did some role playing and then had refreshments-cookies in the shape of traffic signs.

Apricots

Friday night we went to a party at the inlaws. Unfortunately, it was cancelled but no one told us. We took home 1 and one-half boxes of apricots. So Saturday was spent canning apricots. I was able to put up 12 bottles of apricot juice.

Bananas

We went to a discount store on Saturday. We were hoping to get cereal and I think thats the only thing we didn’t get. They had a 40 pound box for $11.00 dollars. My children love bananas so I thought that would be okay. Many of the bananas were ripe with a few quickly passing the point were they would be good for eating. Figuring I could use them for banana bread later, I froze most of them. Today, I’m using the ones I didn’t freeze to make banana bread, banana cookies, banana muffins and banana cream pie. Forty pounds is a lot of banana.

Lots of “stuff”

My husband got me a curio cabinet from freecycle. Most of the clips to hold in the glass are broken so we went to get some. The first store we went to didn’t have any so we went to Lowe’s. We were looking at a cart that was full of clearance items. My hubby asked about a fake doorknob, the kind that doesn’t latch but is used for doors that just pull open like closets. The salesman said he would knock it down from the clearance price of just over $6.00 to $1.00. When my husband asked about the electrical tools, the clerk told him he could have the two power tools for $10.00 each or $20.00 for the both of them or $15.00 for everything on the cart. So now we have 25 fake doorknobs, 3 bags of sprinkler parts, lawn strippers, drawer pulls, 10-15 garden planning CDs, finials, 3-4 paper tiger replacement blades (good because we have the tool and a room full of wallpaper we want to remove), emergency light control socket, a tape measure, a whole roll of tie wire like used to close off garbage bags, a dead bolt, pull chains, lawn mower blades (that don’t fit our lawn mower), a couple of valances, wall switch covers, a bag of bolts, a tub surround and other stuff for $16.03 total. The clearance price for this “stuff” was $1,126.60. I am happy for the tub surround as we needed one anyway. The valances and one matching switch plate cover will go in my girls room. My son wants the drawer pulls. My husband was happy for the sprinkler parts and will my father-in-law when we take the leftovers to him. Where do I put the rest of the “stuff” for now? Its in my livingroom and driving me nuts. Oh well. It made my husband happy. By the way, still no glass clips.

I need to do better having our Family Home Evenings so I thought I’d post my lesson ideas here. It keeps me accountable. So this is the first.
Tithing
Scripture: Leviticuss 27: 30, 34
Song: I Want to Give the Lord My Tenth, Sing With Me B 47

We will talk about how paying our tithing is one of the ways we can acknowledge all God has given us and show our love and appreciation.
We will talk about why we should pay our tithing. Children have interesting insights so I can hardly wait to found out what they will say. Some possible answers include: to obey the law of tithing, to build up the Kingdom of God on Earth, to show our love, etc. I’m sure many of you could come up with better answers. We will fill out a tithing slip in preparation for Sunday.
I have a game about tithing that we will play. After that we will have refreshments. Maybe make cookies to look like money.

My garden

Half of my garden is doing fine.   Tomatoes, strawberries and peppers are doing fantastic.  My poor zucchini and cucumbers don’t seem to be able to get going.  I don’t think even the cucumbers have come up yet.  Kinda ironic as people always seem to get too much zucchini and I can’t even get mine to grow.
